Day 18: Truly a road less traveled

Total Miles – 116

Sorry this is a day late but we have had NO SERVICE where we landed and a good portion of the day so we are posting this as soon as we hit civilization.

We left Walmart at Marquette, MI today heading towards Deer Park.  As we’ve mentioned we did not want to stay on highways because our goal is to see the country not drive by it. Well we got our wish today.

We started out on Highway 41 and 28 and then only on 28 until H-15 to H-58 Melstrand MI. Then H58 all the way up to/through Grand Marais to Deer Park. We landed at Muskallonge State Park for the night.

Now all that sounds fine but let me tell you that it’s been quite a day as about 15 miles of that journey was all dirt roads.  The majority of H-58 from Melstrand to Grand Marais is closed in the winter with speed limit signs for snow mobiles only.

We did not plan off road-ing on this trip but we did see some amazing views of Lake Superior. We took pictures of the 12 mile beach and saw some beautiful cabins right on Lake Superior that were for sale.   Surprisingly, the only wildlife we’ve seen all day has been a chipmunk and geese.

Earlier we stopped outside of Marquette at a visitor’s center and the gal there showed us some roads that the maps and google did not offer to bring us closer to the shoreline of Superior on our journey.  So we made sure that they were able to be traveled on with an RV. And technically they were. LOL

All in all it was a pretty interesting day...We passed through Christmas along the way and Munising and that was about all the civilization we found. But in the end we just can’t get over the fact that Superior is a lake… When you stand on some of the beaches all you need is the salty air. You have the seagulls…

That’s all for now folks have a great night or day depending on when this gets posted.
