Day 16: Lake Superior in all it's glory!

Total Miles - 162.4

We left Cloquet, Minnesota to take another road less traveled and do a little exploration around Lake Superior. We headed up towards Red Cliff, Wisconsin on a Route 13 South (which incidentally actually went North - East - and eventually South). We missed our turns a couple of times but finally landed on the right road. We went across the Richard I. Bong Bridge into Wisconsin (please understand these pictures are for your viewing pleasure only and taken through a dirty dash window). ONCE again no sign so: WELCOME TO WISCONSIN!

Meandering down this road we traveled back and forth along the water fronts edge and I actually thought that we found the ocean in Wisconsin... but it is just the biggest lake I have ever seen. It is incredible.

We drove through little towns and stopped to catch some cute photos along the way like this little historic gazebo in Port Wing, WI. We also saw a turkey in the woods along the and at first I thought it was our Speaker of the house in his native state but he turned tail to quickly for me to a picture of him. Then ambling quickly across the road was a black bear (the first I've seen in the wild) and of course the camera was not at the ready so these will remain tales to tell.

Meyer's beach on Lake Superior was a hidden surprise. It was beautifully cool and the only thing missing was the smell of salty sea air. It seemed funny to see all this water, reminiscent of the ocean, but with pine trees surrounding it. Absolutely stunning though.

In Bayfield there were marina's that reminded me of the east coast and hidden among the back streets of Ashland was a beautiful old train station that was restored and being used for personal businesses. That along with an original steam engine.

Well, as usual, we are exhausted and ended up stopping just across the boarder in Ironwood, MI (and look a blurry sign, LOL). I'll post more tomorrow on Facebook. Have a good night.
